Redding History

What perhaps is most unique about Redding’s history is that there is no founder like many of the other surrounding communities. The southern half of Redding became part of Fairfield in 1670. In the early 1700s, the area was occupied by an Indian village, and in 1714 John Read was the first white man to settle there. His home, Lonetown Manor, became the center of a busy farm settlement. John Read’s son took over administration of Lonetown Manor in 1722, and by 1767, the Connecticut General Assembly incorporated the town as Redding. At that time Redding had less than 1,000 residents.

The Danbury and Norwalk Railroad line came to Redding in 1852. Steam-powered factories were being built and farmland was being left unplanted because of many floods and increasing availability to lower-priced western goods. The only industry that was able to compete with this was Georgetown’s Gilbert & Bennett. The company continued to grow and employ many people. Because of this, Georgetown increased in inhabitants and the rest of Redding’s population decreased.

By the end of World War II, new housing construction began in Redding because of the post-war housing boom. Because commuting and access was easier to job centers in Danbury, Bridgeport, and lower Fairfield County, Redding began to attract many developers. Residents were worried that so much development would hurt Redding’s character, and so the first zoning regulations became effective in June 1950.

Redding Parks & Recreation

Redding is known for its beautiful outdoors and historic sites. Redding offers many trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and four ponds that are available for fishing. The Parks and Recreation Department is very involved and offers many public tennis courts, fields for soccer, football, lacrosse, and baseball. Along with the many public facilities, there is also a private golf and tennis club available. The Parks and Recreation Department also sponsors Concert on the Green, which is a series of free concerts held from June through August.

Redding offers many parks that you will not want to miss! Topstone Park is the town’s only municipal park, with a 25-acre pond that is available for swimming and canoeing. The park also offers more than 3 miles of hiking trails. The Putnam Memorial State Park is a historic park that covers 800-acres. The park was Revolutionary army campsite in the winter of 1778. The Putnam Memorial State Park offers picnic tables, a pond, and hiking and biking trails. The Collis P. Huntington State Park covers 900-acres and offers over 7 miles of trails available for hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and cross-country skiers. There are also 4 ponds available for fishing.

The Highstead Arboretum is a sanctuary that serves as a place to study the woodland habitat and the native species of Redding. The arboretum is open to all members who participate in programs offered regularly or use the research materials available in the barn. The herbarium is home to more than 100 specimens, and the reference library contains more than 900 volumes. You can also participate in a self-guided tour of the native tree and shrubbery collections.

Mark Twain lived in Redding and was a major presence in the community. The Mark Twain House is located in Hartford which is where he lived before he died. Here you can get a real sense of how Twain and his family lived during their financially stable times.
